(It-cleft sentence)

「It is + 形容詞 + that + 主語 + 動詞」
- It is clear that he didn’t understand.
→ 「It is clear(明らかだ)」が主な主張で、「that he didn’t understand(彼が理解していない)」がその内容。

happy, angry, sad などは「It is happy that…」
It is happy that she won.(不自然)→ She is happy that she won.(彼女が勝って嬉しい。)
ただし、sad は状況を客観的に評価する文脈で例外的に使える(例: It is sad that he gave up.)。
tall, heavy, blue などは「It is tall that…」
It is tall that he grew up.(意味不明)→ He is tall.(彼は背が高い。)
It is running that he escaped.(不自然)→ He was running when he escaped.(彼は逃げるとき走っていた。)
特に「It’s obvious that…」とか「It’s true that…」。
It’s clear that he doesn’t get it.(彼が理解してないのは明らかだ。)
It’s likely that she’ll be late.(彼女が遅れる可能性が高いよ。)
It’s obvious she’s tired.(彼女が疲れてるのは明白だ。)
It’s important we finish this.(これを終わらせることが大事だ。)
It’s regrettable that we couldn’t help.(助けられなかったのは残念だ。)→ 口語だと “Too bad we couldn’t help.”
It’s essential that you stay calm.(冷静でいることが不可欠だ。)→ 口語では “You’ve gotta stay calm.”
It’s hardly possible he did it alone.(彼が一人でやったなんてほとんどありえない。)
It’s never true he lied.(彼が嘘ついたなんて絶対ありえない。)
