would の意味と用法 would rather や would like to
助動詞の would のいろいろな用法についてみよう。TOEIC でも頻出。
～であろう
～であろう、と未来について表すときの would 。
- 推量で示す
- Will より弱め

Will との違い
Will もまた未来について表すときに使われる。
その特徴は、

- would より確実性が強め

～してくれますでしょうか？ Would you ~
～してくれますでしょうか？と丁寧にお願いをするときの would 。
- 意志を確認するお願い
- Will you より丁寧

Please をつけてより丁寧に。

お願いの would、mind を使ったヴァージョン。
mind が入って、ちょっと申し訳なさがあり。

～してもよろしいでしょうか？ Would you mind if I ~
~ してもよろしいでしょうか？と丁寧に許可をえるときの would 。
- 相手の意志を尊重して許可をえるとき
- 規則の確認ならば、May I ~ や Could I ~
Would you mind if I close the window?
Would you mind if I smoke here?
してもいいよと答えるならば、No で答える。気にしないよ。
同様表現に、
Do you mind if I ~ がある。
Do you mind if I close the window?
May I ~ や Could I ~ との違い
同じく丁寧に許可をえるときに使う。
- 意志の尊重に限らず、規則の確認にも使える
- Can I より丁寧

許可をえるときに使う。

よく～したものだ
よく～したものだと過去の習慣について表すときの would 。
I would go skating with my father.
- 頻度は関係ない
- むしろ規則的にやってなかったことにつかわれる
- 規則的にやってた事なら used to
- 過去の事実や状態には使えない
副詞の often や sometimes とよく使われる。
He would sometimes be later for it.
She would often take a walk before lunch.
used to との違い
同じく習慣を表す助動詞
- 規則的にやってたことにつかわれる
- 現在はやってない
- 過去の事実や状態にも使える
My mother used to take me to church on Sundays.
There used to be a bar about here.
will との違い
will は、よく～していると現在の習慣を表す
The old man will sit in that cafe on his own.
どうしても～しようとしなかった would not ~
どうしても～しようとしなかったと過去の拒絶を表す would
The agent would not take a traveler’s check
She would not marry him.
どうしても～しようとした
肯定分だと、どうしても～しようとしたと過去の固執を表す would
My mother would let me help her
～したい would like to ~
～したいと願望を表す would 。want to ~ よりも丁寧。
would like to ~ で、～したい
I would like to explain to you our business.
I would like to introduce our services.
He would like to confirm just in case.
疑問文だと、~したいですか？
Would you like to look around?
What would you like to eat?
～ をいただきたい would like ~
～がほしいと願望を表す would 。want ~ よりも丁寧。
疑問文だと、~はいかがですか？
~ はどうですか？ Would you like to ~ ?
Would you like to ~ の疑問文には、~はどうですか？という勧誘を表すこともある。
Would you like to go together?

私の意見では～だと思う I would say ~
控えめに意見を言うときの would 。推定で物を言うときにも使う。丁寧な言い方。
I would say she is about 50.
略して
I’d say ~ とも使われる。
I’d say it’s about a few days.
～と言わざるをえない I would have to say ~
具体的なことを言わなければならない時に、やんわりと物を言うときの would 。
I would have to say that your business is not enough.
～よりもむしろ～したい would rather ~
~よりもむしろ～したいと比較を表す would
would rather A than B で、B するよりも A したい。
She would rather die than marry him.
My wife would rather stay at home than go out.
同様表現に、

がある。
